They used a lot of manpower to shift 50 tonnes of stone and clay.
But this group of volunteers has done it to resurface a popular footpath linking Warsash to Swanwick to make it easier for walkers and to reduce flood risk.
The volunteers hard at work resurfacing the footpath
The Warsash Conservation Volunteers, with help from workers at Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), worked together to resurface around 50 metres of the pathway from the Passage Lane car park in Warsash to the Hamble Ferry point.
Over two days 20 volunteers took to the site to complete the work. They were given more than £2,000 funding from Hampshire County Council’s Countryside Service to contribute to the job.
It was more than six months worth of organisation putting it all together because of health and safety checks, and getting approval from Rural England, Hampshire County Council and Fareham Borough Council.
Warsash resident Martyn Shears, who founded the voluntary group four years ago, said: “Our role is to actually try to get work done as opposed to people doing a lot of talking about it.
“It gets quite flooded here from the rain but also from the tide. We’ve made the bit by the ferry point quite high. So much so that fingers crossed we won’t have too many problems.”
“It’s our way of adding something back to the community. On average about 40 to 50 people a morning use the footpath, as well as anyone else in the community who uses it. So I think there’s a lot of people that will benefit from this work.”
